Teaching

I work with schools, religious institutions, and charitable organizations to deliver training sessions, lectures, and workshops centred around aspects of the study of Christianity and Judaism; religion, ancient history, and the humanities more broadly; and understanding culture through different media. I am a registered speaker with RE-Hubs, and a sitting member of my local SACRE board.

Please do Get In Touch if you are looking for a guest speaker related to any of these topics.

A selection of recent teaching and training engagements can be found below.

Community Programme | Jewish Identity & Culture During the Second Temple Period

North Shore Jewish Center, New York

This series of two lectures provided an introduction to Jewish life in Judea (and surrounding areas) from the 1st century BCE - 1st century CE, including the architecture, music, art, clothing, and broader cultural environment, with an overview of the archaeological and literary evidence.

School Workshop | Jewish Festivals: Hannukah

Yrs 5 and 6, Langley Park Primary School; Yr. 4, Greenleaf Primary School

This 40-minute session is designed to support the KS-2 RE curriculum, using Hannukah to explore Jewish festivals and holidays. Students are introduced to key words in Hebrew, get the opprotunity to engage in Hannukah customs, and learn about how celebrations differ across different Jewish ethnic groups.

School Workshop | Domestic Life in Ancient Rome

Yr 4, Harris Academy Shortlands

This hour-long session was designed to support the KS2 history curriculum. It covered household structure, differences in homes across social classes, Roman bathrooms and kitchens, and children's toys. Learning incorporated object handling, the opportunity to try (reproduction) Roman clothing, and a virtual exploration of a Roman villa in Pompeii.

Community Programme | Introduction to Talmud

Adult B'nei Mitzvah Class, Bromley Reform Synagogue

This lecture provides an overview of what the Talmud is, and why it was created. It also introduces students to a page from the Vilna edition of the Babylonian Talmud, with an explanation of the layout and guidance on navigating the text. Students also get the opportunity to engage with a point of discussion from the text, and to contribute their own interpretation.

RE Teacher Training | Teaching Christianity with Respect to Judaism

Faculty, Parish Church of England Primary School; Heads of RE, Aquinas Trust

This hour-long session introduces teachers to some common misconceptions about Judaism, and its relationship to Christianity, that they may inadvertently replicate in RE lessons. This includes old anti-Judaic and antisemitic tropes imbedded in our culture, and thus often hard to spot. The session aims to help teachers improve their instruction of both Christianity and Judaism, free from prejudice.
